Title:   End-to-End Data Center Virtualization

Length:   2 Hours

Technical Level:   Intermediate

Abstract:   Virtualization has been an integral part of IT planning for effective resource optimization, management simplification and isolation on Data Centers. Because virtualization touches multiple layers in the Data Center, understanding the full scope of virtualization technologies is required for effective planning, design and deployments. The effects are applicable to Classical Ethernet, Data Center Bridging, Unified IO, Unified Computing, servers of multiple types, hypervisors, virtual machines, virtual switches, virtualized adapters, storage, fibre-channel, services and transport environments which taken collectively require in-depth understanding for an end-to-end strategy. This session approaches this by inviting you to a «journey» inside an end-to-end virtualized Data Center infrastructure. This journey will take a «day in the life» approach starting from the Data Center Core layer towards the storage on the back-end, being all the infrastructure in between fully virtualized. This session will discuss topics such as VDC, vPC, VN-Link, virtual services, distributed and virtual switching, NIV, virtual adapters, NPV, VSANs and many other «V» technologies associated with the packet flows on an end-to-end virtualized Data Center. Considerations on how to achieve that and how these technologies interact are on the scope of this session as well. Please «Fasten your seat belts» and welcome to the End-to-End Data Center Virtualization journey.

Title:   Overlay Transport Virtualization

Length:   2 Hours

Technical Level:   Intermediate

Abstract:   This session features a detailed analysis of the architectural aspects, implementation details and deployment benefits behind the Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV) technology recently introduced by Cisco. The attendees will learn how OTV, an industry first solution, significantly simplifies Data Center Interconnect (DCI) deployments by extending Ethernet LANs between multiple sites over any network, making multiple data centers look like one logical data center.

The attendees will learn how OTV is aimed at providing Layer 2 connectivity beyond the Layer 3 boundary while maintaining the scalability, failure containment and operational simplicity that the Layer 3 boundary provides. OTV involves foundational changes to the learning and forwarding principles of traditional VPN technologies. OTV is a ?MAC in IP? technology where the MAC address reachability information is conveyed in a control protocol. The OTV architecture is discussed in detail, giving the attendee a clear understanding of the technical aspects of the technology.

The multiple benefits achieved by OTV are discussed in detail during the session. Some of the improvement areas examined in the discussion include core transparency, multi-homing, loop prevention, failure isolation, high availability, bandwidth optimization, etc.

This session does NOT cover the technical aspects of the traditional Layer 2 VPN technologies such as EoMPLS, VPLS, etc.

Title:   Data Center Networking: Taking Risk Away from Layer 2 Interconnects

Length:   2 Hours

Technical Level:   Intermediate

Abstract:   This intermediate session details a solution for providing a means of Layer 2 communications adjacency to support operating system clustering, file system clustering, virtual machine mobility, symmetric traffic flows, and more in a highly resilient multisite data center infrastructure. Starting from the building blocks of spanning-tree implementations and considerations, the session continues with details on how to control the Layer 2 control and data planes to limit negative effects present today in geographically diverse Layer 2 domains. The emphasis is on multisite data center interconnect and specifics of service advertisement and site failover. Considerations are given for tying users to either site in an active/standby, active/active per application, and active/active within an application relationship. Transport mechanisms such as tag switching, Ethernet over MPLS, Virtual Private LAN Service, MPLSoGRE, OTV, Virtual Ethernet, ServerFarm to User First Hop Redundancy, User to ServerFarm redundancy with Route Health Injection, 802.1s and w, load sharing multisite traffic on intra-data center VLANs, global site load balancing, and others. This session compares alternatives with direct Layer 2 links on dedicated services or DWDM lambdas, point-to-point and multipoint scenarios, configurations using existing RPVST or MST deployments within a data center site, sharing Layer 2 and Layer 3 services, and operations and administration considerations.
